Birthstone: Pearl ::: Symbolizes: Longevity

A Mother's Return

By Courtney Frey

I threw my heart to the bottom of an ocean,

And there it hid inside the pain.

It turned black, and down in the dark it stayed.

It’s been a year now, since it’s seen the land,

And I can cry no more.

I heard the mighty waves down under roar;

And watch my heart come now to shore.

Floating gently near my feet,

I realize, tis not my heart I see.

Instead, a shining object, rounded perfectly.

Dismayed and quite uncertain,

Of where my heart might be;

I started out into the waters,

To find the sorrow belonging to me.

Emmersed and filled with fear,

Preparing to go under,

I heard the object call me near,

So I returned, filled with wonder.

Closer now, my spirit heard,

The voice of the object through gentle words;

“Hi Mom … it’s me.”

*****

What starts out as a speck of dirt,

Soon becomes a priceless pearl.

What begins as a mustard seed,

Soon grows into a mighty tree.

So, on this day that I remember you,

It seems to me that this too is true;

The most glorious of treasures,

Come from the unexpected few.
