April

Birthstone: Diamond ::: Symbolizes: Innocence

The Dream

By Courtney Frey

I see a woman in the park on a bench,

Her clothes are worn and dirty,

And she looks like she could use a friend.

I sit and ask if she?d like to share my lunch with me,

She smiles and looks stunned, grins through rotting teeth.

I didn?t have much to say to her, so we sat silently,

Till the woman leaned in and whispered, "I had a dream."

I just smiled as she began to tell me ?

?There was a girl whose life was sad, her hope was gone

her heart weighed down with sorrow,

She saw a road without beginning or end

No crossroads for her to meet.

She'd lost it all, except the shoes on her feet,

And her stomach ached with hunger.

So she found a bench, in my dream,

And sat down to wait and wonder.

She pitied herself and then she grieved,

Felt stripped of innocence and separated from family.

She had so many questions, no one to ask.

Never had she felt so alone,

Or so badly wanting to go back.

I felt sorry for the woman, for such a dreadful dream,

And touched her hand with my own,

And expressed my apologies.

She laughed out loud and then leaned in to hug me,

And then she said, "Oh no honey, it wasn?t me in that dream,

It was you - don't you see?"

Up from the pit of my stomach came the sorrow and the grief,

The denial I had suffered, trying to survive this day.

The woman saw my tears fall,

And wiped one of them away.

Then, almost like a mother

She leaned close enough to say ..

"You are not alone my child,

there are others that hurt like you do.

Celebrate the day you mothered the infant

That was born unto you.

What you don't know is what I see,

And what I see is innocence.

For you shared your lunch with me,

And I knew immediately,

Before you said a word;

You were a mother - for your heart heard.

And you listened."

Through a haze of tears I thanked the stranger,

Who'd reminded me of me.

I'd forgotten who I was, and what I was living for,

And as she handed me a flower from the cart

From a grocery store,

She said, "Happy Birth Day,"

And yet, she said so much more.
